Club History

In 1880 the Racing Club obtained about 100 acres of land from the original Crown grantee Isabella Taylor, and faciltated the reversion of this land back to the Crown, conditional upon it being resreved for a race course.

The Club spent a large amount of money improving the land and racing shortly commenced here, and has continued unabated to this day. During the 1920's there was considerable pressure on the Crown to abandon the racetrack reserve and give it up for commercial development.

However, the feisty little race club resisted all attempts to remove this great public asset, and it raced on. In 1949 the area was Gazzetted as "Mathew Bennett Park". In 1956 the construction of a golf course was proposed and this picturesque course now surrounds the racetrack.

In recent years the Club has undertaken a major facilities overhaul. The racing surface has been regrassed, a new running rail constructed. new horse stalls and saddling area built, and a new juges tower erected. 2010 will also see the operation of a new winning post.
